Rain, Beer, Tears, and a fond farewell
It was a great weekend for the Coopers lacrosse club. First up was Kavu B. I have to admit that this is not the same Tentawon/Kavu B of recent years. They have definitely picked up some good players and will be an up and coming force as long as they keep thier team together. An 8 O'clock game certainly made things interesting, as well as the torrential downpours! It was a tight game for the first 1 and a half quarters, both defenses played well and Dom made a few key saves to keep the score at Zero. That would be the impetus for what would become Coopers' first shutout in over 10 years (according to Dan at least). To be fair, one of Kavu B's goals was called back for a 50 foot head fling that ended up hitting one of our defenders and they definitely deserve a point or two for putting on one hell of a drink up!!! However, the victory was tainted by what seems to be a season ending injury to our middie leader Murph, who after a ferocious hit collapse to the ground with a broken clavicle. It is a hard loss to accept, but hopefully he will be able to at least sing Karaoke to get him through the coming months!!!!
Less than 12 hours later we were suiting up again to take on a well traveled Bigfoot squad. It was really nice to see a team from Oregon travel well. It appears that they have picked up some great players as well, and they too will become a force if they can keep thier squad together over the next few years. Coopers took the field with several players sitting out injured (or hungover?) and the game started with a 1-1 tie. Dom once again played out of his mind, and the defense held the team to a season average ~2 goals. The offense clicked well and Coopers came out with a 14-2 victory.
Once again, we lost another player following this game. Miles Wheeler, our very humble and quiet long stick defender has left for greener (and Sunnier) pastures, and accepted a job in San Diego. He was sent off in Coopers fashion, with a friday night outing to fremont. It sucks when you get to know a guy, and they have to follow life where it takes them. However, I cant feel too bad for a guy that will be living 3 blocks from the beach. He will be missed and hopefully he will come up for a game or two in the off season. Good luck, bon voyage and don't let the door know hit ya, where the good lord split ya!!!
